As a rising new star in the British, and the world music scene, Freddie Mercury and his family used to retreat to what is now ”Marashi” apartment whenever they came back to Zanzibar on holidays.Next to Tembo House Hotel is also what used to be the British Consulate, where in 1874, Dr. Livingstone’s body was brought before embarking on its long journey back to England.A stone throw away is the Beit-al-Ajaib of House of wonders. Flanking the Beit-al-Ajaib is the Old Fort on one side and the Palace Museum on the other side.In other words, Tembo House Hotel is situated on a prime location, you need not go far to find the shops, the restaurants and the Historical sites that Zanzibar Stone Town has on offer.Zanzibar port is just 5 minutes drive away and the Zanzibar International Airport a further 15 minutes away.Welcome home away from home This landmark building, is the largest and by far, the tallest building in Stone Town. ![]() I am really impressed with the honesty of this hotel. I lost $60 USD - manager was so willing to work with me. He said most of the time in his 23 years the customer has it somewhere. They reviewed the tape with me and no one entered my room while I was out. Once I was at another hotel I found it inside my passport - the only place I did not look. My debit card also did not work so I couldn’t pay taxi from Tembo to another hotel and back to the airport. I only had $100 which was the price of the transfers. Again, manager was so willing to work with me (luckily I found a taxi company that took PayPal). The hotel is in the center of town and old. ![]() But the fact that they did this for me speaks volumes about their customer service. It is centrally located and the AC is good. You have to wait 15 min for hot water but then it was great. The history and overall ambiance blew me away. Not the best hotel o have stayed in - but wow with their customer service. All in all for the price and people manning it, I would 100 stay here again.… They do not serve alcohol and you cannot drink on premises. This is THE place to stay in Stone Town! The hotel design is stylish and beautiful, with 3 swimming pools, a terrace restaurant with a view of the water, seating areas, beach lounge chairs, and rooftop spaces to view the ocean. Our room was in the annex, which is in an adjacent building. We loved our FANTASTIC, large room on the second floor, with a large en suite bathroom. Our room was air conditioned, which was so refreshing. The annex has its own swimming pool! It's walled, but open above. There is also a pool table and seating area in the lobby of the annex. There was a staff member posted at the entrance 24 hours a day.
